R.J. Torbert was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Los Angeles, California. He attended Los Angeles City College and earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California
After working as a pharmaceutical sales representative for several years, he joined the U.S. Army where he earned the rank of Captain and was assigned to the Army's Aviation Engineering Division where he served as an Army Aviator for two years. He graduated from the University of Southern California with an M.A.
in Modern Languages and was hired by General Motors Corporation as a Motor Transport Officer at Fort Bliss, Texas, Fort Polk, Louisiana, Fort Bliss, Texas, Fort Lewis, Washington, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort Drum, New York and Fort Sill, Oklahoma before being discharged from the U.S Army in 1969 with the rank of Captain.
